Personal, Social, Emotional Education (including RSE)
Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from our own actions. - Dalai Lama
At St John’s Primary School, our Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is essential in fostering confident, responsible, and emotionally intelligent pupils. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
We follow the HeartSmart scheme, which aligns with our Christian ethos and core values of love, respect, and truth. HeartSmart helps children develop emotional well-being, self-worth, and positive relationships by promoting wise decision-making, kindness, and resilience. The scheme is structured around five fun phrases that make learning engaging and memorable for pupils, encouraging them to practice these values daily. More information about the Heartsmart scheme can be found at www.heartsmarttv.com/videos/heartsmart-high-five
We also aim to develop responsible citizens. We teach pupils about their role in the wider world, encouraging respect for diversity, a sense of social responsibility, and active participation in their communities. By understanding their rights and responsibilities, children learn how to be compassionate, informed citizens who contribute positively to society.
Our PSHE links with our key learning behaviors: adaptability, collaboration, curiosity, independence, motivation, and resilience. These behaviors are woven into all aspects of school life, with the aim of helping children become confident, curious learners who collaborate effectively and persevere through challenges.
In addition to formal PSHE lessons, we aim to integrate the key learning into our daily worships, where pupils reflect on personal growth, spiritual development, and their roles in society. Through worship, we reinforce themes alongside our Christian values, encouraging children to live out love, respect, and truth in their interactions and decisions.
Our comprehensive curriculum covers vital areas such as emotional health, online and offline safety, relationships, citizenship, and respect for diversity. By embedding PSHE into all areas of school life, we aim to nurture well-rounded, compassionate individuals who are prepared for life’s challenges and opportunities while actively contributing to their communities as responsible citizens.
Success if not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts - Winston Churchill.
