Design and Technology at St John’s inspires children to have a curiosity about the world we live in and an enthusiasm to create new things. It encourages children of all ages and abilities to develop these skills, while preparing them to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world; encouraging them to become independent, creative problem solvers and thinkers. Through carefully planned projects, children are helped to develop their resilience and perseverance as they consider how something works and how to use this information to create something that fulfils their brief.  

Our DT curriculum covers a range of product design skills encouraging children to understand and explore the use of a variety of tools and materials – including food technology, textiles, electronics and construction. Children create each project using the Design-Make-Evaluate process, which encourages them to really think about who they are designing for, while asking them to critically evaluate how and why their designs change. This gives opportunity to consider how they would improve their design as well as allowing them to reflect on the skills they used to make the product.
