Year 1/2

Summer 1 - The Great Outdoors

This term we will be learning about the natural environment around us by finding out about the plants and trees that we find in our school grounds and the local area. Through nature walks in our woodland area and the trip to Queen Elizabeth Country Park, the children will be able to identify and name some common plants and trees. We will observe and describe seeds and begin to understand how a seed can grow into a plant. We will explore some of the basic parts of a plant and why these parts of the plant are important for its growth and survival. We will undertake simple tests and experiments to begin to understand that plants need water, light and warmth in order to grow and stay healthy.

Spring 2 - Where do I live?

This term we will looked at the local area of Basingstoke with a focus on the town centre. We learnt about the physical and human features of Basingstoke in geography and how shopping has changed in history. In English we read 'The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse' and wrote letters to the country mouse to persuade her to come and visit Basingstoke. We went on a trip to Basingstoke town centre and applied our geographical skills practically by doing fieldwork.

Spring 1 - Titanic

This term we learnt all about the history of the Titanic! We had a visit and did workshops with outreach from the Sea City Museum in Southampton and had the opportunity to handle historical artefacts, dress up in historical clothing and did a science experiment based on how the Titanic sank. In English we made persuasive posters for the workshop and learnt how to use imperative ('bossy') verbs. In art we printed waves and boats based on the work of Alfred Wallis and in music we made our own string instruments and performed and composed using them!

Autumn 2 - Into the Unknown

In this theme we learnt all about different significant explorers in history. We looked where the explorers travelled, learning about compass points and the different continents of the world. We enjoyed an amazing "Explorers Day", dressed up and did a drama workshop all about explorers. In DT we made amazing moon buggies with moving wheels using cardboard, wood and plastic straws!

Autumn 1 - Welcome to our world

This term we had a geography focus to our theme: learning about the different parts of the United Kingdom and the different countries in it. In science learned about our senses and the seasons. We even had a surprise visitor, Beegu, who came and ask us questions about our world!
