Year 5/6

Autumn 1 2026

This half-term, our unit is called 'Mission to Mars'. The children will explore where the Earth fits in the solar system, about what space exploration is and why it is important. In science, the children will learn what planets are in our solar system, how they move around the Sun, as well as the movement of the moon in relation to Earth. Through this learning, the children will be able to make links between day and night due to the Earth's rotation. To supplement this learning, we will explore significant historical events such as the moon landings in English; explore gravity as a force in science; and be mindful that our planet is part of our stewardship, which leads to exploring climate change in geography.

Summer 2 2026

This half-term, our unit was called 'The Golden Age of Islam'. The children learnt about the importance of the history of early Islamic life – history is the main driver. We started the unit with RE, exploring what ritual and peace meant within the Muslim tradition of Islam. In history, the children enquired about what impact the early Islamic civilisation had on the modern world. The children were then able to compare the expansion of Islam in chronological order, compared to other historical events studied, as well as understand how life in Europe may have been different to that of Baghdad in 900AD. They explored Islamic textiles in art; in music, the children further explored pitch and notation using ukuleles; plus began to prepare and perform in the end of year production, 'Oliver with a Twist'.
